THE DEAL | SPIT
Shuffle cards and divide them evenly, each player receives 26 cards.
Each player deals out their stockpiles in a row. Each player has five piles, the first pile has 1 card, the second has 2.. and so on. The fifth pile should have five cards. These piles cards may be dealt face-down then flipped or simply dealt face-up. The remaining 11 cards are your spit cards, these must be kept secret, even from yourself!
Outline of stockpiles:Stack 1: (0 cards face down), 1 card face upStack 2: 1 card face down, 1 card face upStack 3: 2 cards face down, 1 card face upStack 4: 3 cards face down, 1 card face upStack 5: 4 cards face down, 1 card face up
After both players are ready, both yell “spit!’ and start the game by turning over the top card in your spit pile. Both players first spit card are placed side by side between their stockpiles, these are spit piles. Players play at the same time, as fast as they possibly can. The goal is to shed all the cards in your stockpiles into your spit pile. Using one hand and one card at a time, players may:
- Play a face-up card from a stockpile onto a spit pile. To do so, the card played must be one up or one below in sequence. Cards ‘turn corner,’ so if an ace is played a King or two can be played next.
- If 1+ of your stockpiles has the top card face-down, turn the top card face-up.
- You may move a face-up card from the top of a stockpile to an empty space. You can not exceed five stockpiles.
Cards count as soon as they are played and may not be retracted.
If players reach an impasse and can no longer play on their spit pile, both shout “spit!”, flip a spit card and place it on top of their spit pile. Play continues if possible, if both players are unable to play, repeat.
In the event there is an impasse and one player is out of spit cards, one player spits alone on only one pile. This is the only pile they can spit on from then on.
A new layout must be dealt when:
- One player gets rid of all the cards in their stockpile
- There is an impasse and both players are out of spit cards but have stockpiles remaining.
If this happens, players will get cards by slapping a spit pile as fast as possible. Strategic players will try to slap the pile with the smaller number of cards. If players try to slap the same pile, the players whose hand is underneath gets the pile, and the other player gets the other pile. Players then add the cards from their stockpiles to the spit pile the grabbed, shuffle, and re-deal a new layout. When both players are ready, they yell “spit!”, and the game continues on.
If one player has less than 15 cards, they will not be able to deal a full set of stockpiles or a spit pile. There will only be one spit pile.
If there is only one spit pile, the first player to play all their stockpile cards does not get cards from the center. The other player collects the spit pile and all the unplayed stockpile cards. The first player to play all their spit cards and cards in their layout wins.
- Some games use only four stockpiles.
- Some versions allow the player who gets rid of all the cards in their layout to choose which spit pile they want, there is no slapping.
- There is also a variation which requires cards played on the spit pile must alternate in colors.
In speed, each player keeps in their hand no more (or less) than five cards which are kept secret from their opponent. They also have a stockpile to draw from. Play cards on the face-up spit piles after a card has been played, draw a new one. To deal, place 10 cards on either end, face-down, and two cards in the middle. These cards remain face-down until both players have received their cards and are ready to play. Players get 15 cards each. Some versions use only 5 cards on the side piles and each player then gets 20 cards. After drawing five cards from your personal stockpile, both players flip over one of the single cards in the center of the layout. From the five cards in their hand, try to play on the spit piles. Cards can be played if they are either one higher or lower in rank than the card played upon. If you run out of plays to make and have fewer than 5 cards in hand, draw from your stockpile and continue playing. If both players reach an impasse and cannot make a play, despite having five cards in hand, slip one card face-up from the side piles on to the spit pile beside it. Continue doing this until one player is able to play. If these side piles run dry, take the cards from the spit pile (below the top card), shuffle and create new side piles. Once a player has played all the cards in their hand and from their stockpile they have won the game! If you choose to score, winner receives one point for every card left in their opponents stockpile.
